Hearing loss is something where preventative measures can take place. It’s not guaranteed to help prevent it in its entirety as the ears are a very vulnerable part of the body and it can often be affected generally by age, regardless of how well you take care of your hearing. Here are some tips for preventing hearing loss and keeping it in good condition for as long as possible.

Avoid loud noises

We tend to forget that noise levels can contribute to noise-induced hearing loss and so it’s worth being aware of what levels to limit your hearing to. For example, a conversation is around 60dB, whereas listening to music on full volume through headphones can be anywhere between 100-110dB. It’s important to try and not go above the 80 mark when it comes to dB levels. If you do, then you could be putting your hearing at risk as a result.

If you have ringing in your ears or they’re muffled when it comes to sound, then you may have done some form of damage.

Protect your ears

Protecting your ears is something you should be doing actively and especially when you’re in scenarios where there are loud noises or music. One example is if you’re working in an environment that’s loud. You want to make sure that your employers are providing you with the necessary protective equipment for your ears. If not, then they’re putting your health and risk and that could be a big problem for the employer legally.

Other examples are attending loud concerts and making sure you wear noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to help reduce the sound levels.

Keep your ears clean

A lot of problems with ear health can come from the hygiene of your ears. It’s important where you can to keep your ears clean. Making sure no water gets into them or any dirt is essential to stop them from getting infected and causing possible damage to your hearing and the ear canal in general.

So, when stepping out of the shower, make sure to get rid of any water that’s gone inside of your ears. The same is said when it comes to going swimming or getting involved in any activities where dirt is likely to get into your ears.

Get your hearing tested regularly

And finally, when it comes to preventing hearing loss, just like any medical worries, it’s good to get it checked out. An audiologist can be very helpful in testing your hearing quality and assessing your needs for a hearing aid or device of some sort. It’s a good way of checking your hearing on a regular basis and spotting any potential issues earlier on. It’s always better to catch something sooner rather than later, after all.

Preventing hearing loss isn’t guaranteed to help prevent it completely but it can certainly help. The steps you take to protect your hearing are certainly going to help you live a longer life with a better quality of hearing.
